Spanish renewable energy developer Acciona has started construction on the new Malgarida I and II plants in Chile that will entail an investment of $170m.

The Malgarida I and II photovoltaic complex has a combined capacity of 238MWp. The project follows the commissioning of the 84MW Tolpán wind farm and 64MWp Usya PV plant in the first half of 2020.

The new Chilean photovoltaic complex will be the group’s seventh renewable energy facility in the country.

Upon completion in 2021, the plant will increase Acciona’s installed capacity in Chile to 922MW.

The Malgarida project will have an annual capacity of 654GWh, which is equivalent to meet the energy needs of 280,000 Chilean homes. The solar power project will reduce 512,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

The project will require 580,000 modules which will be set upon horizontal trackers across an area of 535 hectares. The project will create about 700 jobs during its peak construction.

The Spanish firm has already reached at 684MW operational capacity in Chile this year after the operation of Tolpán wind farm and Usya photovoltaic plant.

The Tolpán Sur wind farm is located in Chile’s Araucanía Region, in the Renaico commune.

The Usya photovoltaic plant is located in the municipality of Calama, in Chile’s Antofagasta Region.
