Spanish engineering company Abengoa along with its partner SEPCOIII, engineering and construction company, has been selected to build the Jubail 3A reverse osmosis desalination plant in Saudi Arabia.

The contract to build 600,000m³/d desalination facility was awarded by Acwa Power, a company that develops, invests, owners and operates energy generation and desalinated water.

Under the deal, Abengoa will be responsible for the engineering, supply and construction of the plant situated to the south of the city of the same name, in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia, in the northeast of the country.

The Jubail 3A facility is expected to be the second-largest facility with reverse osmosis technology in Saudi Arabia and will have the same capacity as the Rabigh III plant, which is already under construction.

Abengoa said that the Jubail 3A reverse osmosis desalination plant will ensure the supply of drinking water to Riyadh, Qassim and Eastern Provinces throughout the year.

The construction of tanks to store the treated water with a capacity of one day of production and photovoltaic solar field are included in the project.

The project comprises seawater intake, pumping, pre-treatment, reverse osmosis system with energy recovery, post-treatment, pumping station and product water storage.

It also includes effluent treatment, discharge by outfall and field solar photovoltaic along with the associated electrical installations that include the construction of an electrical substation of 380/33 kV.

Abengoa said that the project is part of a programme conducted by the Saudi government to promote private participation in the country’s water sector.

The project is being developed by a consortium that includes ACWA Power, Gulf Investment and Al Bawani Water & Power Company.

The promoter of the project, Saudi Water Partnership Company, will receive all the desalinated water from the project.
