The method involves applying a bond adhesive to an asphalt-based substrate on a roof to create an adhesive layer. The bond adhesive used in this method includes a silyl-terminated polymer and a hydrocarbon tackifier resin, and it does not contain phenolic resin. The adhesive layer is then used to directly apply a membrane, creating a bond between the substrate and the membrane that exceeds 1 pli, as measured by ASTM D1876.

In one embodiment of the method, the thickness of the adhesive layer is at least 5 mils and less than 30 mils. The bond adhesive can be applied to the substrate using various techniques, such as atomizing and spraying the adhesive, pumping it through a power roller, gravity feeding it through a drop spreader, or squeezing it onto the substrate. The bond adhesive has a dynamic viscosity of less than 13,000 cPs and a static viscosity ranging from about 3600 to about 24,000 cPs. The application rate of the bond adhesive should be at least 50 square feet per gallon.

Another embodiment of the method involves using a bond adhesive that includes a silyl-terminated polymer and a low VOC-generating moisture scavenger. The moisture scavenger is a silane compound with organo functional groups and hydrolysable groups that do not generate methanol upon hydrolysis. The membrane used in this embodiment can be a thermoplastic olefin or EPDM membrane. The bond adhesive in this case is devoid of solvent, and the application rate is also at least 50 square feet per gallon.

A further embodiment of the method includes using a bond adhesive that contains a silyl-terminated polymer and a non-phthalate plasticizer. The non-phthalate plasticizer can be selected from glycol ethers and glycol ether esters. The membrane used in this embodiment can be a thermoplastic olefin or EPDM membrane. The bond adhesive has a dynamic viscosity of less than 13,000 cPs and a static viscosity ranging from about 3600 to about 24,000 cPs. The bond adhesive can be applied using the same techniques mentioned earlier.
