The top five companies accounted for 30% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Samsung Heavy Industries filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the construction industry in Q1 2023. The company filed 53 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 58 in the previous quarter. It was followed by State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council with 42 environmental sustainability patent filings, China State Shipbuilding (40 filings), and China Communications Construction Group (32 filings) in Q1 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 33% share of total patent filings

The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the construction industry in Q1 2023 was in China with 33%, followed by South Korea (23%) and Japan (18%). The share represented by China was 15% lower than the 48% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
