UK-based consultancy Mott MacDonald has introduced a new virtual reality (VR)-based solution that will enable users to simulate their design and construction processes.

The new technology, called Rehearsive, was launched following a three-month beta period with 250 volunteers from the UK infrastructure sector.

Rehearsive is designed to help infrastructure designers and operators to rehearse and assess multiple construction scenarios in VR and desktop, and then optimise building designs.

It also expedites design reviews and facilitates stakeholder understanding.

Mott MacDonald immersive technologies head Andrew Zhao said: “Rehearsive allows users to make the most of opportunities created through remote working. With so many people currently working remotely, it is set to prove its worth even more by boosting productivity as the industry recovers.

“Those who have recognised the efficiency benefits gained by using this technology will be at an advantage. Our successful beta period allowed us to take the positive feedback from testers and use it to drive the product to be even more usable and intuitive, developing a better market fit.”

The new solution can be integrated with existing 3D workflows and building information modelling (BIM) models and allows the staff to communicate using voice chat.

In addition, Rehearsive enables the operator to evaluate the impact of design decisions on on-site operations and accordingly initiate steps to mitigate any risks.

According to the company, the use of the solution can help in saving up to 15% on capital delivery budget.

Rehearsive is hosted on Moata, Mott MacDonald’s digital twin platform. Moata is an open platform that leverages data to address infrastructure issues across the asset life cycle.
