A consortium of South Korea-based Samsung C&T Corp and Vietnam-based Lilama Corp has secured a $940m contract to construct first LNG-fired power plant in Vietnam.

PetroVietnam Power has awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to the consortium, reported Reuters.

The consortium will construct the Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 power facilities with a total capacity of 1.5GW in Dong Nai province.

Currently, Vietnam produces most of its power from coal.

The country is drafting a new power development plan that features 22 LNG-fired power facilities.

Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 will make use of turbines manufactured by General Electric.

The facilities are expected to begin commercial power production between 2024 and 2025.

Last week, PetroVietnam Gas said that it intends to test run the first LNG terminal in the country in Q4 2022.

The terminal is due to delivery imported LNG to the two power facilities.
