Swedish construction company Skanska has secured a $1.56bn contract from NJ Transit to build the Portal North Bridge replacement in Hudson County, New Jersey, US.

The company secured the contract as part of a joint venture with Traylor Bros.

Skanska will have a $1.09bn share in the contract, which will be included in the US order bookings for the fourth quarter of last year.

Under the contract, the existing Portal North Bridge will be replaced with a new two-track fixed structure crossing over the Hackensack River.

To be constructed adjacent to the existing structure, the new bridge will be more than 15m in height, and also includes approximately 4km approaches in the Northeast Corridor.

According to the company, the bridge will be double the height of the existing bridge.

Skanska said that the contract includes proposed improvements such as decommissioning and removal of the existing Portal Bridge, as well as new rail bridges over the adjacent roadways and construction access platforms.

The improvements also comprise new track configuration, catenary and communication support structures, access roads, retaining walls traction power supply, and distribution.

Construction works at the site are slated to begin in the second quarter of 2022, and completion is scheduled during the third quarter of 2027.

Last September, Skanska received a contract from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for designing and constructing a new interchange at Interstate 75 (I-75) and Big Bend Road in Hillsborough County.

As part of the $82m contract, Skanska was responsible for widening and reconstructing Big Bend Road and reconfiguring I-75 ramps to facilitate smooth traffic flow.
