Webuild Group and its joint venture (JV) partner Implenia have secured a €651m contract for the Brenner Base Tunnel project in Austria.
The contract for the Lot H41 Gola del Sill-Pfons on the Austrian side of the project, which is said to be the world’s longest railway tunnel, has been awarded by European firm BBT.

The railway tunnel between Italy and Austria will be 55km long.
Expected to create 400 jobs, the lot involves the construction of the railway from Gola del Sill in the north to the town of Pfons located further south.
Scope of work also includes excavation for the two parallel tunnels for nearly 7.3km, including auxiliary tunnels.
Besides, the JV will undertake mechanised method of excavation for a further 16.5km and complete wall lining of the completed tunnels.

By GlobalDataIn a press statement, Webuild said: “The mechanised method will deploy two tunnel-boring machines (TBMs), among the most sophisticated in the sector, with a diameter of more than 10 metres.
“The design of the project focuses on the environmental sustainability of the project during construction: the logistics of the work sites are designed to reduce travel times for the transport of materials, and measures to reduce dust and noise are foreseen.”
Furthermore, the partners will build an underground emergency stop at Innsbruck, access tunnels, exploratory tunnels and parts of other secondary tunnels.
Webuild has been already contracted for other lots for the Brenner Base Tunnel project. These include the Isarco River Underpass, the Mules 2-3 lot, and the Lot Tulfes-Pfons, which has been completed.
Said to be crucial for Europe, the Brenner Base Tunnel will form a key part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) that aims to connect Helsinki in Finland and La Valletta in Malta.
