BayCare Health System has announced the start of construction of the new South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City, Florida, US.

Opened in 1953, the original hospital has undergone 12 major additions, renovations and expansions.

Construction of the new hospital was originally scheduled to commence in August but was delayed due to increase in Covid-19 cases.

The new hospital will have six floors, two six-story towers and 420,000ft2, which is double the size of the current hospital.

It will include 146 inpatient/observation private hospital rooms, a 30-bed emergency department, an eight-bed surgery centre, four interventional/cardiac catheterisation suites and 26 intensive care unit beds.

A 15-bed mother and baby unit as well as a Labor & Delivery, which has C-section room, will also be included in the new hospital.

BayCare stated that the new hospital will also have space for future expansion to 176 rooms.

Construction work of the new South Florida Baptist Hospital is anticipated to complete in early 2024.

It will include physician offices, administrative offices as well as outpatient services for adult rehabilitation, infusion centre, laboratory, imaging, wound and hyperbaric centre.

The new hospital will have approximately 800 team members and over 250 physicians.
