Canadian baseball club Toronto Blue Jays has partnered with architecture practice Populous for the $300m renovation of Rogers Centre.

Opened in 1989, Rogers Centre has remained a multi-purpose stadium without any major renovations in its 33-year history.

The renovation comprises a series of projects that will turn Rogers Centre into a ballpark with enhanced player facilities.

It is also expected to facilitate an improved fan experience with the addition of social-gathering spaces for families and casual fans.

The project will also address existing challenges with the current stadium and follows direct fan feedback and market research.  

Toronto Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro said: “We are committed to building a sustainable championship organisation for years to come and this renovation to Rogers Centre will give new and lifelong Blue Jays fans a ballpark where they can proudly cheer on their team.”

To be phased over the coming two to three offseasons, the renovation projects will not affect in-season baseball activity.

They will be fully focused on the interior of the building, including the 100L and 200L outfield, 500L and 100L infield, and field level.

Populous previously teamed up with Toronto Blue Jays on the development of the Blue Jays Player Development Complex.

Populous principal and senior architect Pat Tangen said: “This innovative transformation of Rogers Centre reimagines a modern, baseball-centric fan experience.

“A smart, efficient and meaningful upgrade that will honour the venue, these renovations will introduce a wide variety of interactive viewing opportunities that draw fans into the action no matter their location in the ballpark.”

This April, Populous was selected to design a multi-use event arena in Munich, Germany, following a multi-stage architecture competition.
