The new agreement outlines work already under way, with completion anticipated in autumn 2029.

The new development will replace much of the existing Renton High School site and expand the campus to a total footprint of 33.3 acres.

The three-storey building will provide classroom capacity for 1,600 students across 350,000ft², offering spaces for core curriculum, career and technical education, art, science and elective subjects.

Additional facilities in the plans include health services, special support spaces, a library, cafeteria, gymnasiums, community areas, learning commons, and both a lighted baseball/softball field and a practice football/soccer field.

The project will retain the original 1930s school facade and the IKEA Performing Arts Center.

Construction is being organised in phases to accommodate ongoing school operations, as the current high school remains in use while building progresses.

The project’s design team includes BRIC Architects, AHBL Civil/Landscape, PCS Structural Solutions, Metrix Engineers (mechanical) and GFT Electrical.

BRIC Architecture began designing the project in spring 2023 and consulted with students, staff and the local community throughout the summer and autumn to help shape the new facility.

The project required acquiring 42 parcels, including 32 residential homes and eight commercial sites, and relocating the district’s warehouse and nutrition services building.

Skanska provided relocation assistance and reimbursements for property owners affected by the redevelopment, and demolition of existing structures is nearing completion.

In a separate announcement, Skanska confirmed a $78m contract amendment with an existing client for an education project in the western US.

The project involves replacing an existing school facility on the same site and is expected to be completed in 2029.

Recently, Skanska secured a $271m contract to construct a homeport pier for four US Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island.
