Skanska has been awarded a $271m contract to build a new homeport pier for four US Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC) at Naval Station Newport in Newport, Rhode Island.

The contract, awarded by NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic, involves replacing the existing Pier 1 with a facility designed to support these vessels and related infrastructure at the active Navy site.

The contract involves demolishing the existing 100×1,580ft Pier 1 and constructing a new 80×1,000ft pier.

The new structure is designed to berth four US Coast Guard OPCs and will include substations, water and wastewater connections, and a compressed-air system to support the vessels while docked.

In addition to the main pier, the scheme covers the construction of about 290ft of new bulkhead, dredging, site improvements and new underground utilities.

Construction is expected to begin this month, with completion targeted for March 2030.

Skanska USA Civil New England operations senior vice-president Paul Pedini said: “This project represents an important investment in the infrastructure needed to support the US Coast Guard’s growing fleet and operations at Naval Station Newport.

“We’re proud to bring our maritime construction expertise to this project and deliver a new homeport pier with the systems needed to serve these vessels for years to come.”

The new pier will be built next to Skanska’s $147m NOAA OMAO Ship & Support Facility project at Naval Station Newport.

Skanska, which builds maritime and federal infrastructure across the US, will include the contract in its US order bookings for the third quarter of 2026.

In a separate announcement, Skanska secured an additional contract worth $60m from Lee Health to develop a new hospital and medical office building in Fort Myers, Florida.

This latest contract extends the scope of the existing project to cover interior build-out finishes as well as electrical, mechanical and plumbing work related to the expansion of the West Bed Tower.

The full contract encompasses construction of a five-storey hospital totalling about 38,600m² along with a central energy plant.

The scheme also includes an approximately 11,600m² medical office building, which will house an ambulatory surgery centre.

Construction began in June 2024 and is expected to be completed by May 2028.
