Finnish construction company YIT has secured a contract to design, construct and provide long-term facility management for a new educational and community complex in Lahela, Tuusula.

The agreement with the Municipality of Tuusula is valued at €70m ($79m) and will be formally added to YIT’s order book following final building permit approval.

The project will provide new premises with a total gross floor area of about 13,900m².

The facilities will accommodate 900 comprehensive school pupils in grades 1 to 9, 40 preschool children and 168 children in early childhood education, as well as 120 staff.

The property will also include designated youth facilities and is expected to function as a shared community space, offering leisure and recreational opportunities for local residents.

Under the terms of the life-cycle model, YIT will oversee both the construction and a 20-year service and maintenance period.

The company will also be responsible for optimising the building’s energy use throughout this service phase.

Construction is set to begin in early spring 2027, with completion targeted for late summer 2029.

The facilities are due to open for use in August 2029 and will bring together the Hyrylä secondary school, Vaunukangas daycare centre and school, and Ruotsinkylä school in a single complex.

Mayor of Tuusula Janne Mellin said: “We are creating a modern, safe and inspiring environment for learning, while the community facilities will also serve all residents of the municipality. It is important for us to develop spaces that meet residents’ needs flexibly and act as the heart of the local community.”

Efforts to minimise the building’s carbon footprint are being prioritised at all stages of the project.

The new complex aims to reach the highest level (five stars) in the Rakennustieto environmental classification system.

A planned solar power system will cover at least 30% of the property’s electricity and lighting needs.

YIT Building Construction segment design for education and healthcare projects director Matti Varstala said: “I am glad that we were chosen as the project’s contractor and provider of life-cycle services. We will create high-quality, healthy, and safe premises in Tuusula for both students and employees. In addition to educational use, the premises will serve as a meeting place for young people.”

Last month, YIT and the City of Helsinki agreed to begin the implementation phase of the Jätkäsaari swimming and sports centre in Helsinki.
