Webuild has concluded excavation works on the Trebisacce Tunnel, a 3.3km dual-tube structure that represents the longest tunnel in the Third Mega Lot of Italy’s Ionian (Jonica) State Road SS106 upgrade.
Carried out on behalf of ANAS, a subsidiary of FS Italiane Group, the construction represents one of the more intricate undertakings within the larger plan to modernise the area’s transport links.

The newly excavated tunnel features two tubes, one for each direction, providing a bypass around challenging inland terrain and removing SS106 traffic from urban areas in the Calabrian section.
According to Webuild, the Third Mega Lot is intended to facilitate faster and more direct connections between the regions of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia.
The project is also designed to link to major routes, including the A2 and A14 motorways, aiming to shorten travel times.
These ongoing works have supported approximately 1,200 jobs, directly and through subcontracting, and have involved around 900 different companies, nearly half of which are located in Calabria.
The Third Mega Lot traverses the province of Cosenza, serving municipalities such as Francavilla Marittima, Cerchiara di Calabria, Villapiana, Trebisacce, Albidona, Amendolara and Roseto Capo Spulico.
Additional structures built as part of this phase include the Avena and Straface viaducts.
The Avena Viaduct spans 660m, featuring four piers, two of which are designed in a V shape, connecting Albidona and Amendolara.
Work continues on the Annunziata Viaduct, which is about 1km long and includes double-decked lanes to improve traffic flow.
In total, the Third Mega Lot includes 13 tunnels with a combined length of 10km and 16 viaducts spanning 7km.
Four new interchanges have been added to enhance regional and coastal accessibility.
Webuild has also been appointed to handle Lot 1 of the SS106 project, a separate 17km section between the Coserie Viaduct and Corigliano Ovest interchange.
This phase includes 15 viaducts, three overpasses and an additional 1.4km artificial tunnel.
Up to 500 workers are anticipated during peak construction, drawing on experience and technical expertise gained from work on the Third Mega Lot.
Together, the two SS106 phases are part of a set of 21 construction projects being undertaken by Webuild across Southern Italy, with an overall contract value exceeding €16bn.
These projects collectively employ more than 10,000 people and have engaged about 7,500 suppliers.
Elsewhere in Calabria, Webuild is carrying out the Cosenza–Paola/San Lucido track-doubling project for RFI, constructing more than 22km of new rail line, including the 15km Santomarco Tunnel, aimed at improving rail traffic between coastal and inland areas.
