Welcome to T&TI’s annual ‘Machinery, Plant & Equipment Review’. Once again we have received an overwhelming response to our call for entries from international tunnelling equipment manufacturers. It still amazes me just how many manufacturing companies there are vying for supply contracts in what is surely one of the most ‘speciality’ markets in civil engineering.

But this ‘speciality’ market seems to be gaining considerable media interest of late, and not for all the wrong reasons.

The Discovery Channel has just started broadcasting a series of 10 documentaries on ‘Extreme Engineering’. The good news is, four of these are on tunnelling projects! Admittedly, the Trans-Atlantic tunnel was slightly ‘pie in the sky’, but the AlpTransit (19th August), New York Subway, and Boston Big Dig (16th September) episodes prove essential viewing. The attention to detail featured in the AlpTransit episode, considering the main-stream audience, is very impressive. All credit to the Discovery Channel for producing viewing that really reflects the dedication and skill prevalent in the tunnelling industry. Catch the series if you can, its definitely worth it!
