Top Malaysian contractors, including United Engineers, IJM Corporation and YTL Corporation, are eyeing plans for a US$290M light rail system, part of which will be built in tunnel, in Putrajaya, the country’s new federal centre (T&TI, October 2001, p14). Deputy minister Tengku Datuk Adnan Tengku Mansor confirmed that the government planned to go-ahead with the new rail system which is likely to comprise two lines, one of 12.6km, the other 7.2km. Construction could start as soon as 2002.
