Operating profit at Svedala was down $16.4m at $61m for the first nine months of 1999. Total order bookings for the same period were down from $1 346m to $1 170m, including $14m from companies acquired. The difference compared with 1998 is said to be due mainly to the weak start of the year and several major projects orders received at the start of 1998. According to the company, a positive trend in the US and southern Europe was seen to continue in the third quarter of the year, although Germany and South America remained weak. Meanwhile, the countries of South East Asia were showing signs of recovery but from a very low level.
