The Chinese government has pledged $20bn towards civil engineering and telecommunications projects following the award of the 2008 Olympic Games to Beijing. A reported $3.7bn has been set aside for improving Beijing’s transport including tripling the city’s highways and quadrupling the capacity of its subway system. Communications and infrastructure will receive a further $400M.
