Invited visitors to the Atlas Copco stand will be asked to check their drilling skills with a new simulator (Virtual Rig Simulator or VRS) which checks accuracy and timing while operating a twin-boom jumbo drill rig. Would-be operators are presented with a view of the tunnel face on which the drills are positioned using standard Atlas Copco jumbo controls. The first drill is set to work while the second is positioned, and so on until the ’round’ is complete. The final display gives the performance results as to accuracy and speed. The Editor was given a sneak preview of the equipment at the company’s Orebro headquarters before it was shipped to Munich. Modesty forbids a record of the results which, while not bad for a (comparative) beginner, are bound to be beaten at Bauma!
