Design consultancy Arup has been commissioned to enable the transformation of Stadstheater Arnhem, a performing arts centre in the Netherlands.

In a statement, Arup said it will transform the historic theatre into a “sustainable and future-oriented cultural landmark”.

The company’s role extends to providing integrated engineering and sustainability consultancy services. These include structural and building services design, fire safety, architectural lighting design, acoustics, and climate-responsive strategies.

The consultancy’s approach aims to balance technical performance with user experience.

As part of the design team, Arup is collaborating with Dutch architects Braaksma & Roos and CIVIC to reimagine the theatre.

The design team said: “We have created a sustainable and future-oriented design that respects the historical value of the site while making room for new cultural and social functions.”

This project aims to combine heritage with “innovation” in the city, creating a green urban space that caters to a wide range of cultural and social activities.

The new Stadstheater Arnhem is due to open in 2028.

The renewed location will retain the architectural character of the original building while introducing new spaces designed to enhance the user experience.

The design also aims to integrate nature into the urban fabric.

The design consultancy noted that this initiative is in line with the city’s vision for a greener and “more inclusive” Arnhem.

Last month, Arup won a design competition for the new headquarters of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) at Normannsløkka in Oslo, in association with Norwegian architectural companies Nordic Office of Architecture and Rodeo Arkitekter.

This project will cover 60,000m² of gross floor area and 50,000m² of utility floor area, focusing on developing contemporary specialist spaces that include studios, publishing desks, post-production facilities, concert studios, workshops, and warehouses.
