Norwegian construction company Veidekke has secured a contract from the Swedish Transport Administration to carry out critical works on the Korsvägen portion of the West Link rail project in Gothenburg, Sweden.

This development follows the termination of a previous agreement with the contractor initially responsible for the section.

The new contract, to be executed over a limited period, involves safeguarding the work site and executing essential production tasks in the Korsvägen, Skår, and Almedal areas.

The West Link’s Korsvägen section spans just over 3km, running from Landala through Korsvägen, Jakobsdal, and Skår, and linking to existing tracks in Almedal.

The construction features an underground station with platforms, commercial spaces and bicycle garage on a middle level, and three exits.

Veidekke's work on the project has been defined as an execution contract, with its scope presently not known and invoicing to be determined on an ongoing basis.

However, immediate tasks include assessing the project's current status and prioritising activities for a phased takeover of the site.

The work aims to complete specific sections for handover to stakeholders, including Gothenburg Municipality and Liseberg.

Veidekke Anläggning Väst regional manager Fredrik Indevall said: “We are proud to have once again earned the trust of the Swedish Transport Administration to enter into an existing project for a limited period of time.

“Our joint focus is now on executing the work needed to minimise impact on stakeholders, and on performing to a standard that creates the best possible conditions for the project's completion through future contracts.”

In August this year, Veidekke secured another contract from the Swedish Transport Administration. This contract was for the construction of the Stora Hamnkanalen tunnel, another component of the West Link rail project.
