Suffolk has commenced construction as the design-build partner for the Integrated Command & Communications Centre at Lightspeed in Sweetwater, Florida, US.

This facility, which represents a $210m investment, aims to enhance the safety and resilience of Miami-Dade County.

The project will establish one of the most advanced emergency response centres in the region.

As the designated design-build partner, Suffolk will oversee both the design and construction phases of the facility.

Key features will include a next-generation centre equipped with advanced video technology for real-time situational awareness, a rooftop helipad capable of accommodating helicopters weighing up to 30,000lb, and an 80ft-tall communications tower to support emergency connectivity throughout the area.

The centre will also provide secure operational space for the mayor, county commissioners, and other officials to facilitate effective responses during emergencies.

The project aims for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification and will include 600 electric vehicle charging stations and an on-site fuelling station for essential fleets.

The Lightspeed centre is designed to centralise emergency response efforts across multiple agencies during crises and community needs.

Upon completion, it will serve as the county's headquarters for emergency coordination, prepared to address hurricanes, public safety incidents, and complex regional emergencies.

Suffolk is executing this project near an active 911 call centre, necessitating careful coordination and logistics to minimise disruptions.

Approximately 25% of the construction value will be sourced from small business enterprises.

Suffolk employs digital modelling in design-build projects to preemptively identify and resolve potential issues, thereby reducing risks and costs.

Suffolk East Coast Florida general manager Thomas Thrasher said: “Lightspeed is one of the most consequential projects underway in Miami-Dade, and Suffolk is honoured to have been selected to deliver it.

“We are excited to bring our deep experience designing and building complex, high-impact, and high-integrity facilities, and we take that responsibility seriously.”

Suffolk's portfolio in South Florida also includes various hospitality, residential, aviation, and transportation projects.

Its developments comprise the Seminole Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Palm Beach Gardens, and the Joule House in Miami, along with expansions at Palm Beach International Airport and terminals at PortMiami.
