Octavius Regional Civil Engineering has secured a role in the £105m ($139.5m) Banwell Bypass project in the UK pertaining to civil works, structures, and drainage.

The overall project will be delivered by Galliford Try on behalf of North Somerset Council. It involves constructing a 3.3km single carriageway connecting the A371 and A368 roads.

The Banwell Bypass is designed to alleviate local traffic congestion and support development.

Funding for the bypass comes from three sources. These include North Somerset Council, a Housing Infrastructure Fund grant from Homes England, and the West of England Combined Authority Economic Development Fund.

Octavius Regional Civil Engineering functions as the self-delivery business of Octavius, a transport infrastructure Tier 1 contractor.

Its team is currently engaged in initial site activities, handling the diversion of buried utilities and constructing a haul road for new transport routes.

Octavius Regional Civil Engineering delivery director Chris Ellis said: “The win extends our client portfolio, a first project for Galliford Try in the south-west [of England].

“As well as creating a new road we are also helping provide new walking, cycling and horse-riding routes - fostering more integrated and sustainable ways of travel in the west.”

In addition, there are measures aimed at mitigating environmental impacts and safeguarding local wildlife habitats. These include creating ponds, woodlands, and wetlands to achieve over 40% biodiversity net gain.

Galliford Try's Infrastructure business was awarded a £66.5m contract this April to execute this project under the Procure Partnerships Framework.

The scheme is expected to ease traffic congestion on the A38 towards Weston-super-Mare by addressing the existing bottleneck near Banwell village.

Furthermore, the bypass scheme will facilitate future housing developments in the area.

Octavius is already executing two major projects for North Somerset Council: improvements on the A38 Major Road Network and replacing the Winterstoke Road bridge.

Additionally, Octavius Regional Civil Engineering is part of Bristol City Council’s Highways Asset Management and Civils Framework from 2025 to 2029.
