UK-based construction company GRAHAM has secured a contract to construct new offices and laboratory facilities for Forensic Science Northern Ireland (FSNI) in Carrickfergus, County Antrim.

The project, referred to as Project Atlas, aims to provide upgraded accommodation for FSNI staff as part of a wider investment in forensic science infrastructure in the region.

Work is scheduled to begin at the end of the current financial year once a six-month detailed design phase concludes.

The development seeks to support FSNI’s operational requirements within the criminal justice system by delivering modern workspace and laboratories.

FSNI moved temporarily to the Seapark site in 1992. A new laboratory, called The Locard Building, opened at the site in November 2015.

Northern Ireland Justice Minister Naomi Long said: “I was delighted to learn more about FSNI’s recent innovations and development projects, which are contributing to better forensic outcomes. The crucial work FSNI does in the criminal justice system is much appreciated.

“Project Atlas will ensure staff have the opportunity to work in modern, fit-for-purpose facilities that will enable the continued delivery of a valued service.”

This September, the Northern Ireland Department of Justice confirmed the selection of GRAHAM as lead contractor of the project.

The construction contract is part of ongoing efforts to enhance forensic services through improved infrastructure across Northern Ireland.

GRAHAM group COO Jonathan Hall said: “Our experienced team look forward to collaborating with Forensic Science Northern Ireland to deliver a state-of-the-art development that will provide modern forensic facilities with thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces to connect with nature and enhance staff well-being.”

At the start of this month, GRAHAM Interior Fit-Out was awarded a £20m ($26.37m) contract to renovate the His Majesty's Revenue and Customs office complex located in Telford, Shropshire.
