Finnish construction firm YIT has entered into a contract with the municipality of Sodankylä in Northern Finland to build a multi-purpose school building and maintain the property for 20 years.

The €35m contract includes two aspects – one is the construction of the building, which is worth €20m and the 20-year service of the building, which constitutes the remaining €15m.

Construction on the project will begin in the autumn of this year and is expected to be completed by the end of August 2022.

The 8,300m² school building will provide basic education for about 650 students and 100 children in early childhood education and pre-primary education.

It will also include a gym, auditorium, school library and a youth centre along with cultural activities which include local association activities and colleges in the evenings and on weekends.

The design and planning of the new school building are claimed to be adaptable and versatile while taking into account the health and safety of the building.

To achieve higher indoor air quality, YIT plans to follow higher P1 purity class and will use M1 class construction materials and ventilation products.

YIT will also be responsible for cleaning and renovations of the building under the 20-year service period, as per the life cycle model.

Sodankylä municipality project manager Anna de Wit said: “Our objective is a healthy, safe and modern learning environment, from pre-school children to high school students.

“Cooperation between different operators will improve when we move from the temporary facilities to common spaces, as well as cooperation with all locals who use the facilities themselves or with their families.

“The nearby sports park, gymnasium and an ice rink with the future multi-purpose building will form an active hub. The municipality has positive experiences of cooperating with YIT in the previous project, and we are happy to continue that.”
