Finnish construction company YIT has secured the project management contract for the renovation of Aleksanteri School in Tampere, Finland.
In addition to being the project management contractor, YIT will also be the project’s main implementer.
The contract, commissioned by the City of Tampere, carries a client-estimated cost of roughly €20m ($22.4m).
The renovation of Aleksanteri School, which comprises three buildings of varying ages, is particularly challenging due to the structures and courtyard being protected sites, highlighted YIT.
The company will undertake significant structural repairs while enhancing the buildings’ technology and interiors to align with contemporary educational standards.
Construction work is due to commence this June, with delivery of the updated facilities expected in August 2027.

By GlobalDataThe project will improve the school’s accessibility and modernise its environment to better serve its current enrolment of around 550 students across the basic education grades of one to six, including early childhood education preschool groups.
The project is now progressing into its development phase. During this period, the client, main designer, design team, YIT, and end-users will collaboratively plan the improvements and establish the target and ceiling price for the project.
These financial parameters will require approval from the city’s governing bodies before the project advances to the implementation stage.
YIT Pirkanmaa regional director of housing and business facilities Sami Viitanen said: “It is great that we are able to use our extensive expertise in the renovation of the historically valuable Aleksanteri School. We have experience in similar demanding renovation projects, such as the renovation of Tampere City Hall and school projects around the country. In addition, we are used to operating in a dense urban structure, which requires special expertise.
“The project will start with a development phase, during which the scope of the renovation work will be investigated in more detail and the most suitable renovation methods will be agreed upon. This type of project implementation will enable the best outcome for the project.”
Earlier this month, YIT started construction on the Asunto Oy Kuopio Maaherra apartment project in Kuopio, Finland, which involves building a five-storey residential building comprising 51 homes and two commercial premises along with a parking facility.
