Construction work has commenced on 14 new affordable rental homes for seniors in Pender Harbour in the province of British Columbia (BC), Canada.

Planned to feature one- and two-bedroom units, the three-storey apartment is being developed at 12730 Lagoon Road, under a partnership between the Sunshine Coast Regional District, Pender Harbour Seniors Housing Society (PHSHS), and the Province, through BC Housing.

The property will comprise a communal kitchen, shared dining and lounge areas as well as a multi-purpose room. It will also include space for gardening.

British Columbia Seniors’ Services and Long-Term Care Parliamentary Secretary Mable Elmore said: “These new homes will give seniors in Pender Harbour a safe and affordable place to live, along with the supports they need to age in place.

“This project is another example of how our government is putting people first. We will continue to invest in housing like this throughout the province so that B.C.’s communities remain healthy and vibrant.”

The Province has agreed to invest nearly $3.2m (C$4.15m) into the project, which forms part of the BC’s ten-year $5.4bn (C$7bn) housing plan.

Land for the project is being provided by PHSHS, while the Sunshine Coast Regional District has agreed to offer $35,295 (C$45,000) in municipal waivers.

The project is expected to be completed by early 2023.

Once completed, the apartment will be managed by PHSHS, which will be responsible for hospitality services such as housekeeping and an on-site caretaker.

PHSHS chair Les Falk said: “This is a positive step in the fulfilment of Ryan and Sue Campbell’s hope for an integrated seniors’ community, and whose land donation was a pivotal step toward this great project.”
