Webuild has secured a contract valued at €531m ($635m) to construct Lot 1 of the SS106 Jonica state road, a key transportation route in Calabria, Italy.

The section will connect the Coserie Viaduct to the West Corigliano interchange. The award reinforces Webuild’s commitment to advancing critical infrastructure in Southern Italy.

With the latest contract, the company is now involved in 20 projects across the region, including the islands, totalling approximately €16bn in value.

This work supports around 9,500 jobs, both directly and indirectly, as well as 7,500 direct suppliers since the commencement of these projects.

The SS106 Jonica project, commissioned by ANAS (FS Italiane Group), includes the construction of about 17km of road, featuring 15 viaducts, three overpasses, and a twin-tube tunnel measuring 1.4km.

Up to 500 workers will be engaged during the construction phase, utilising expertise from the ongoing Mega Lot 3 of the SS106 Jonica.

The project will incorporate technologies aimed at improving safety, minimising environmental impact, conserving water and energy, and facilitating digital site management.

A monitoring system will be established once the infrastructure is operational. Webuild’s overall contribution to the SS106 Jonica will total approximately 55km of new roadway.

Mega Lot 3, the primary undertaking in the Calabrian section, is nearing 80% completion, with around 1,200 direct and third-party workers currently involved. The supply chain includes over 880 companies, 45% of which are located in Calabria.

Additionally, Webuild has been awarded the Paola-Cosenza Doubling railway project on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria high-speed railway, which involves constructing more than 22km of rail line, including the 15km Santomarco Tunnel.
