Norwegian construction company Veidekke has secured a contract to build the fifth stage of the Humla housing cooperative at Vollebekk in the Bjerke district of Oslo.

The contract has been awarded by Obos Nye Hjem, a provider of real estate services in Norway.

The fifth stage will include the construction of 184 apartments with parking facilities. It is designed as a block of buildings from five to seven storeys above ground.

The roof terraces and roof landscapes are planned with plants on all roofs, in addition to common outdoor areas for activities for residents of all ages.

The apartments will also have a flower meadow for the rare short-haired bumblebee (slåttehumle).

The project will be carried out as a design and build contract and has an estimated value of NOK370m ($40m).

Construction on the project will start this month and is expected to be completed by summer 2022.

Veidekke Bygg Norge executive vice president Hans Olav Sørlie said: “We would once again like to extend our thanks to OBOS for the confidence shown in us, and that we have the opportunity to convert Vollebekk into an attractive residential community.

“With this building stage we will increase the pace to more than 400 apartments in production at Vollebekk, which is a project that we have had the pleasure of developing from the very beginning in close cooperation with OBOS. All parties have interacted well to ensure an optimal and comprehensive building process.”

Additionally, the residential project is planned for Breeam Good classification and the building site will be free of fossil fuels.

Obos housing development executive vice president Arne Baumann said: “In this case we have chosen to start building before sales have started. We are finding that interest in apartments in the new city district is increasing in line with completion.

“The fact that Veidekke has given us the right price for the design and build contract is also an important reason for us choosing to proceed with the project.”

Once completed, the residential project will consist of over 800 homes in total, with some commercial premises.
