Norwegian construction company Veidekke has finalised an agreement with Swedish mining company LKAB to relocate another five historic buildings in the city of Kiruna, Sweden.

The design and build contract worth $13.9m (SEK120m), was awarded to Veidekke as part of Kiruna transformation project, which will see relocation of city centre to a new site.

Project works will be executed by Veidekke unit Berggren & Bergman.

Veidekke explained that the relocation of historic structures is being executed as a collaborative project between LKAB, Berggren and Bergman, LTH Traktor, and ER Bygg.

LKAB Kiruna transformation project manager Mari Kuokkanen said: “We are excited about the opportunity to further build on our strong cooperation from the ongoing relocation of ‘Gula raden’ and the 16-room workmen’s dwellings as well as the first phase of the current project.

“Strong commitment has enabled us to achieve good results together by involving all expertise. Working with a knowledgeable team that understands what LKAB wants this transformation to achieve, drives confidence.”

Currently, preparatory works are said to be underway for relocating city’s wooden buildings including SJ houses on Rälsgatan 11–15 and Baningenjörsvägen five and seven along with associated buildings.
The relocation of the structures is planned in autumn next year.

Upon the completion of the relocation, the company plans to carryout rehabilitation, refurbishment, extensions work and is expected to complete in autumn 2024.
