The Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) has issued planning approval for the £1bn Old Oak Common station being developed by High Speed Two (HS2).

Set to become the largest new railway station in the UK, the Old Oak Common station will be located on the site of the existing Old Oak Common railway depot (GWR and Heathrow Express), south of Willesden Junction Station.

The station, which is designed to achieve a ‘BREEAM Excellent’ certification, will feature 14 platforms including six underground platforms and up to eight platforms on the adjacent Great Western Main Line.

HS2 stations director Matthew Botelle said: “The planning approval for the Old Oak Common super-hub station is an important milestone in the delivery of Britain’s new world-class low carbon railway.”

A joint venture of Balfour Beatty, Vinci and Systra (BBVS) will commence work onsite in June 2020 as part of a contract awarded in September 2019 to build the new HS2 station.

OPDC chair Liz Peace said: “The approval of HS2’s Old Oak Common Station design marks a significant milestone in the delivery of this nationally important project.

“The new station will unlock a huge regeneration opportunity, bringing billions of pounds of investment into the local community and the wider UK economy.”

The station, which will provide direct services to three major airports, eight of Britain’s ten largest cities, is designed by a team led by engineering professional services consulting firm WSP and architects WilkinsonEyre.

Also, OPDC has given green light for lorry movements and onsite road layouts that will be required for the operation and the traffic flow on the station site.
