Following approval from planning authorities, eight prisons will get new houseblocks, while HMP High Down in Surrey will receive a new workshop.
The innovative designs will provide easier access to supporting facilities such as healthcare, kitchens and staff offices that aid in protecting frontline staff and clamping down on crime behind bars.
Seven other prisons will also undergo complete refurbishments, as part of a wider £150m investment in the estate to ‘help bring all jails into the 21st century’.
