he UK Government has announced plans to create over 4,000 new prison places across the country with the construction of new wings and refurbishment of 16 prisons.

Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab unveiled the details of the expansion plan as part of the government’s £4bn investment strategy to create 20,000 modern and innovative prison places.

These prison places are expected to provide the right conditions to rehabilitate prisoners, and give them education, skills and addiction support in order to live crime-free lives on their release.

Following approval from planning authorities, eight prisons will get new houseblocks, while HMP High Down in Surrey will receive a new workshop.

The innovative designs will provide easier access to supporting facilities such as healthcare, kitchens and staff offices that aid in protecting frontline staff and clamping down on crime behind bars.

Planning permission has been secured for five of the prisons – HMPs Stocken, Guys Marsh, High Down, Birmingham and Liverpool.

With new workshops and classrooms, offenders will get vital work and training to find employment on their release.

Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary Dominic Raab, said: “Our unprecedented prison-building programme is the largest in more than a century and will deliver an additional 20,000 prison places by the mid-2020s.”

Construction works at two new prisons that form part of the Deputy Prime Minister’s commitment to construct six modern jails have provided over than 500 jobs and 70 apprenticeships.
