The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) has broken ground on a revitalisation project of its Hillcrest campus.

Located 20.9kms south of the UC San Diego La Jolla Campus, the more than 50-year-old campus covers approximately 60 acres.

The revitalisation project will add new academic medical facilities and housing and fitness facilities.

The construction of the project is estimated to cost $2.5bn to $3bn and is expected to take more than 15 years.

The project will be completed in five major phases, with the first phase including a 250,000ft2 outpatient pavilion.

Slated to open in 2025, the outpatient pavilion will house specialty clinical programmes that include otolaryngology, neurosurgery, oncology, urology, and orthopedics.

It will also feature gastroenterology procedure rooms, ambulatory surgery operating rooms, advanced imaging, infusion, and radiation oncology.

The pavilion is claimed to add more health care services to the region and address the increasing demand for specialised diagnostic, treatment as well as surgical services.

A new parking structure to provide nearly 1,850 spaces for visitors, patients, and employees will also constructed in the Phase-1.

The project will also involve construction of related road as well as utility infrastructure.

The other phases of the project will include the main hospital replacement that once served as the county hospital.

UC San Diego noted that the project is required to comply with 2030 seismic safety provisions of the California Hospital Code.

UC San Diego chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said: “The reimagined Hillcrest campus will increase access to UC San Diego Health’s nationally ranked medical specialties and world-class patient care.

“The revitalisation project will form a modern destination medical centre that will further improve the exceptional care and medical education UC San Diego is known to deliver.”
