Tilbury Douglas (formerly Interserve Construction) is set to begin construction work on the main phase of a new emergency department and Acute Medical Unit at Walsall Manor Hospital after completion of enabling works at the site.

The £40m project will include an Emergency Department (ED) including Resus and Rapid Assessment and Treatment (RAT) area, and Children’s ED; Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC); Paediatric Assessment Unit; Acute Medical Unit as well as provision for Ambulatory Emergency Care services in the future phase.

The existing Emergency Department will also be reconfigured and refurbished to provide additional space for the hospital to include Ambulatory Emergency Care and Imaging services.

The development will improve Walsall’s emergency care facilities and capacity.

Many other specialist facilities that include an isolation room for infectious patients, bariatric provision and digital x-ray rooms are located throughout the site to improve clinical staff efficiency, provide improved patient experience, as well as working environment for staff.

Once opened in 2022, the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital will have capacity to accommodate more than 10,000 patients.
