British construction firm Tilbury Douglas has commenced work on the new Durham Investigative Hub for the Durham Constabulary at DurhamGate, Spennymoor, England.

The new two-storey hub will provide more than 6,600m2 of modern accommodation along with 48 modern cells, evidence stores, and Crime Scene Investigation facilities.

It will also include energy centre, office space, interview rooms, virtual courts, CCTV, medical provisions, and forensic examination rooms.

The company stated that the centralised suite will integrate a safe and improved environment for staff, visitors, detainees, and legal professionals, as well as health workers.

Slated to complete by spring 2023, the Durham Investigative Hub will provide a sustainable and flexible building required to replace the current ageing custody estate.

Procured through the Procure Partnership Framework, the building is designed to comply with the Police Custody Design Guide of Home Office.

Tilbury Douglas North East regional director Mark Gardham said: “We are delighted to be working in collaboration with both Durham Constabulary and the Durham PCC, this is a key investment and will be a fantastic new building to support their operational priorities.

“As a local contractor and Durham City of Culture 2025 supporter, our priority is always to maximise social value, including local supplier use, employment and apprenticeship creation.

“We are also using modern methods of construction to improve health, safety, quality and sustainability outcomes.”

In December last year, the company commenced refurbishment work on the phase one of a major refurbishment project to restore and reopen historic Old Library in Oldham, Greater Manchester.
