Sweco has secured a multiyear contract from Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s national railway company, to spearhead technical efforts for a rail expansion project in Munich.

As part of a consortium, Sweco will provide construction supervision for the expansion of Munich’s S-Bahn commuter rail system.

The contract, which began last month, spans approximately 4.5 years, with the potential for a five-year extension.

The project includes the addition of a second line and the construction of a new tunnel to double the network’s capacity.

The S-Bahn system in Munich consists of 150 stations and more than 400km of track, facilitating roughly 1,000 train journeys each day. Originally designed for 250,000 passengers daily, the system now serves over 800,000 users each day.

These developments are part of wider efforts to enhance connectivity between Munich and its suburbs.

Sweco will deploy approximately 60 experts daily to provide engineering services for the project.

Sweco Germany Business Area president Julia Zantke said: “Sweco has undertaken several projects for Deutsche Bahn in the past, and we have a strong, longstanding relationship.

“As a leading European consultancy in the field of transportation, with 6,000 experts in mobility and active travel, we are proud to have been selected to advise Deutsche Bahn on this project, which is of vital importance for Munich and the entire Bavarian region.”

In March this year, Sweco was selected as part of a project alliance for the design and construction of the first section of the Estonian segment of Rail Baltica.

This EU-funded venture aims to establish a new railway connection from Tallinn, Estonia, through the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) to Poland.

The project is anticipated to continue until 2030.
