The renovation initiative intends to ensure continued safe and efficient operation for all users.

The project covers a range of maintenance tasks, including the installation of new operating, control, and monitoring systems, the replacement of lock gate drives, and updates to comply with the Machinery Directive.

Construction activities will start at the Grevelingensluis in 2027, with work at the Roompotsluis and Bergse Diepsluis lock complexes scheduled to take place subsequently.
The Grevelingensluis, which is located in the Grevelingendam between the Eastern Scheldt and Lake Grevelingen, provides the only shipping route into Lake Grevelingen.
The lock complex also includes three bridges: N59 Grevelingen Bridge, a parallel road bridge for bypass traffic, and Den Ysere Ryve, which accommodates both vehicles and nonmotorised users.
BAM Infra Nederland executive director Henk Post said: “We are very pleased with this first portfolio award for the renovation of four locks. The scale of the task calls for smart collaboration and optimal use of each partner’s expertise.
“Together with Rijkswaterstaat, we are starting the futureproofing of the Grevelingensluis, with a clear focus on sustainability, traceability and broad applicability across the lock portfolio.”
Rijkswaterstaat, in July this year, finalised a major agreement with the GelreGroen joint venture for a motorway project in the Netherlands.
