STRABAG, an Austrian construction company, has won two railway construction contracts worth €192m from Deutsche Bahn’s subsidiary DB Netz in eastern Germany.
Under the first contract valued at €105m, Strabag Rail will work in a consortium with Strabag to upgrade the railway line between Berlin/Brandenburg border and the Berlin outer ring for long-distance trains (Berlin–Dresden Railway / VP 5).

The contract also includes connecting the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) to the long-distance network of Deutsche Bahn.
Construction will begin this month and the completion of the main construction works is expected to take place in January 2025.
Worth €87m, the second contract will see Strabag Rail acting as the lead in a consortium with Hentschke Bau in upgrading the section between Zeithain and Leckwitz on the Leipzig–Dresden railway line for long-distance train service (Project Zeithain / VDE 9).

The project is expected to be completed in summer of 2025. Strabag Rail will complete both the orders with teams from its Business Unit East.

DB Netz plans to have the 16km section in the south of Berlin from Berliner Südkreuz to Blankenfelde (Berlin–Dresden railway) to be upgraded to handle local, regional and long-distance trains and also to provide a high-speed ICE link from the centre of Berlin to the BER airport.
Presently, the section of Berlin–Dresden line is only open for S-Bahn commuter service and diesel freight trains.
Through the contract, the consortium of Strabag will build nearly 3km of the long-track section between the Berlin/Brandenburg border and the Berlin outer ring and also build the Mahlow Curve to link the BER airport to the Berlin-Dresden Railway.
The project also includes the construction of two mainline tracks including switches, overhead lines and safety technology, relocation of the existing S-Bahn track and construction of noise protection walls, among other things.
The Austrian company will also construct four overpasses and a passenger tunnel to replace the existing level crossings.
For the second project, DB Netz plans to have a nearly 10km double-track section of rail between Zeithain and Leckwitz to be renovated and rebuilt as part of the upgrade of the Leipzig–Dresden railway line to a high-speed link.
The project will include the construction of the track system as well as ground engineering works, drainage and underground cables and also the complete upgrade of the signalling and signal box technology, installation of new overhead contact lines along with the construction or renovation of the Glaubitz and Nünchritz stops (platforms and park-and-ride facilities).
As part of the contract, the consortium will also build four bridges along the line, new overpasses and culverts and erect noise barriers with a total area of 30,000m².
