A Strabag-led consortium has won a €194m ($224m) contract to build the final missing section of Slovenia’s 3rd Development Axis (Northern Corridor) – Lot A Velenje.

The project will add a new section to the Velenje-Koroška expressway, designed to support regional transport links between Slovenj Gradec and Velenje by relieving current road traffic and reducing travel times.

Slovenia’s motorway operator DARS commissioned the works, with Strabag responsible for 60% of the project.

The development is part of a broader national infrastructure strategy aimed at enhancing the mobility between the Austrian and Croatian borders, supported by government initiatives and EU cohesion policies.

Lot A Velenje includes construction of a 2.1km expressway, a 552m two-lane viaduct, and 1,120m of cut-and-cover tunnels and caissons.

Strabag will also build a 231m railway underpass, and a temporary diversion of the railway line spanning 280m.

The project includes two interchanges at Velenje and Škale, 3.9km of bypass and service roads, five junctions and five noise barriers. Additional activities involve laying supply lines and adjusting water supply systems.

Construction is scheduled to commence in March 2026 with an anticipated duration of approximately 40 months.

Recently, Strabag completed works on Lots B and H as well as the Konovo Tunnel in Slovenia.

Strabag South + East segment management board member Péter Glöckler said: “In addition to our almost completed works on Lots B and H with the recently opened Konovo Tunnel, we are pleased to take on another section of this important transport link.

“Together with our consortium partner, we will bring our technical expertise to this complex project. STRABAG has been active in Slovenia for over 30 years, and this contract further strengthens our strong local presence.”

Strabag has operated in the Slovenian market since 1995. Its recent projects in Ljubljana include work on the Emonika office tower and new facilities for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The company reported annual turnover of around €150m in the country and an order backlog of approximately €350m.
