British construction company Speller Metcalfe has commenced work on more than £12m of improvements to leisure facilities in Dudley, the UK.

The company stated that the work at Crystal Leisure Centre in Stourbridge has started this week, where a £4.1m refurbishment and maintenance programme is in place to upgrade facilities for Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Work involves improvements to the leisure pool and remodelling the wet changing areas into a ‘village’ arrangement.

Next month, the construction company will also commence work at Halesowen Leisure Centre, where an £8.7m programme of improvements is planned.

The work on the project involves a new entrance, reception, café, and adventure play provision for children.

The project also includes changes to the swimming pool to serve the new learners and advanced swimmers, new ‘village style’ changing rooms, a pool-side viewing area and an advanced fitness suite.

Speller Metcalfe said that the two leisure centres will see significant repairs carried out as part of the proposals, which were led by Alliance Leisure.

Alliance Leisure senior business development manager Julia Goddard said: “This extensive investment in the leisure portfolio will transform the leisure provision for residents throughout the Borough, bringing new opportunities for everyone to enjoy a fantastic array of modern facilities.

“Alliance Leisure will be managing the project in close liaison with Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council and all works will be delivered via the UK Leisure Framework, owned by Denbighshire Council and Managed by Denbighshire Leisure.”

The work on the Crystal and Halesowen leisure centres are part of a wider major regeneration programme bringing more than £1bn investment to the town centre that includes a new £18.2m Dudley leisure centre.

Work at Crystal Leisure Centre is expected to be completed this autumn while Halesowen Leisure Centre in 2022.
