Construction firm Skanska has secured a contract worth NOK2.88bn ($324m) to deliver preparatory work for a water supply system in Oslo, Norway.

The contract has been awarded by The Agency for Water and Wastewater Services in Oslo Municipality on the New Water Supply Oslo project.

The scope of the project will include primarily blasting of rock chambers and three large tunnels with a total length of 5km.

Skanska said that a total of 1.2 million m3 of solid rock masses will be removed. It will deploy seven tunnel rigs during peak production.

The project site is located in central Oslo that has geology, which needs special preparations.

The contract represents the first sub-contract in a wider development, which aims to ensure water supply in Oslo and will provide enough quantities of drinking water even in the event of a failure in key parts of the water supply system.

Construction on the project will commence in September 2020 and will be completed in May 2024.

The value of the order will be included in the company’s Nordic order bookings in the third quarter of 2020.

Separately, the construction firm has won a contract worth about SEK450m ($51.7m) from Akademiska Hus to construct a new Forum Medicum in Lund, Sweden.

The project covers 15,000m² of science and education facilities for the faculty of Medicine at Lund University.

Designed by Henning Larsen Architects, Forum Medicum will feature six floors along with a basement floor.

Construction on the project will commence in the third quarter of 2020 and the office building will be completed during the spring of 2023.

The order value will be included in the company’s order bookings for Sweden for the third quarter of 2020.

Skanska has operations in building construction and civil engineering in Sweden, Norway and Finland.
