Tunnel contractor, Skanska Sverige has been fined US$300,000 for it’s part in the 1997 environmental pollution disaster that occurred during construction of the Hallandsås rail tunnel in Sweden. Work was halted when groundwater was found to be contaminated by sealant used to reduce leakage. The fine was imposed by a Swedish district court who ruled that the firm had risked the health of its workers and caused environmental pollution. The company has expressed its disapointment in the decision, and, as T&TI went to press was deciding whether to appeal against the ruling.
