Spanish wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa has announced its plans to expand its nacelle assembly facility in Taichung to support the 300MW Hai Long 2 offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

Subject to certain conditions including the approval of Hai Long 2 by the Taiwanese authorities and final investment decision by project partners, the expansion is expected to form a regional offshore wind nacelle industrial hub with Taiwan-based suppliers.

In November last year, Siemens Gamesa was selected as the preferred supplier for the Hai Lung 2 offshore wind farm by project developers including Canadian power producer Northland Power and Taiwan-based developer Yushan Energy.

The new facility, which is currently under construction, will begin production in 2021 and will deliver nacelles to Orsted’s Greater Changhua 1&2a offshore wind power project.

The Taichung factory expansion will commence once the nacelle assembly work is completed in 2022. The work will include doubling the plot area to more than 60,000m² along with at least doubling the number of employees working for Siemens Gamesa at the facility.

Siemens Gamesa also plans to build two new production halls and a new warehouse, encompassing local hub and backend production in Taiwan.

Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit CEO Andreas Nauen said: “Our actions to localize and expand nacelle manufacturing in Taiwan demonstrate our strong beliefs in both the Taiwanese market and the Asia Pacific region as a whole.

“Supported by proactive policies, strong wind resources, and a proven contribution to combating climate change, offshore wind is an essential element in the energy mix around the globe.”

Last year, Siemens Gamesa had signed several agreements with local supplies including Yeong Guan Group (YGG), KK Wind Solutions, SINBON, Atech and Würth for localisation of different hub, base frame castings, nacelle components and cabling system for the Hai Lung 2 wind farm.

Siemens Gamesa Offshore Asia-Pacific executive general manager Niels Steenberg said: “We are very glad to announce the reinforcement of our local supplier footprint with four very experienced wind component manufacturers, and a local company.

“We are confident that they can contribute to our vision to create a greater industrial hub in Taiwan, as a foundation for future exports, and we are looking forward to work with them on the Hai Long 2 project.”
