Saudi Arabia-based ACWA Power has selected Shanghai Electric as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor to build the fifth phase of Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park, to be located near Dubai, UAE.

To be built with an investment of $564m, the 900MW Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park will be built in three phases, taking up nearly 12 months for each of the 300MW phases. The EPC contract was signed in a private virtual meeting between the parties.

The solar plant will also be the first utility-scale project, which will operate remotely with zero manpower on site.

The power generated from the Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park will be sold to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) under a power purchase agreement.

The award of the EPC contract follows less than three months of the PPA signing between DEWA and ACWA Power. As per the PPA, the tariff had been set at 1.6953 cents per kilowatt-hour.

ACWA Power chairman Mohammad Abunayyan said: “As we move swiftly forward with implementation, the signing of the EPC agreement between ACWA Power and Shanghai Electric represents a crucial milestone in the delivery of Phase 5 of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park.
