SEGRO has commenced construction of strategic rail freight connection at its Logistics Park Northampton Gateway in the UK.

As part of the development to create the connection for the 35-acre strategic rail freight interchange (SRFI), the company is investing £190m into infrastructure. This will include the new SRFI and significant improvements to the surrounding road network.

The company has also released new CGI images showing how the development will look upon completion.

Segro said that the 450-acre multi-modal logistics development will have five million square feet of sustainable warehouse space and logistics facilities.

The first plots are strategically located next to junction 15 on the M1 motorway and are expected to be available to build upon later this year.

The construction activity during the coming weeks will largely focus on earthworks, including stripping the topsoil for the rail connection, freight terminal, building plateaus and estate roads.

Segro National Logistics managing director Andrew Pilsworth said: “The World Economic Forum estimates that nearly a quarter of the UK’s population is expected to permanently change the way they shop following the pandemic and it is thought that e-commerce could rise from 19.2% to 53% by 2028.

“It will only be possible for people to buy more goods online if they choose to and to have them delivered in a timely manner if we continue to develop high quality warehouse space in the right locations, such as Segro Logistics Park Northampton Gateway.”

Initial work started on site in January last year and enabling works, including ecology, archaeology and ground investigations, to prepare the site for construction, took place in May the same year.

The company has partnered with Highways England, Network Rail and local authorities to deliver the infrastructure improvements, which are slated for completion by the end of 2023.

During the infrastructure construction phase, the Segro Logistics Park Northampton Gateway development is expected to create nearly 7,500 direct jobs.
