Saudi Arabia has plans to construct the world’s largest buildings in an unpopulated area as part of a new $500bn development, called NEOM, reported Bloomberg, citing people aware of the matter.

Claimed to be the brainchild of Saudi Crown Prince and de facto ruler Mohammed bin Salman, NEOM project will see development of twin skyscrapers of about 1,640ft tall.

These buildings will extend horizontally for dozens of miles, the people said.

The skyscrapers would feature a mix of residential, retail and office space, reported the publication.

These will run from the Red Sea coast into the desert.

Designers have been asked to work on a half-mile-long prototype and if this plan goes ahead, then the development would see each structure being larger than the world’s current tallest buildings.

NEOM is Prince Mohammed’s plan to transform an unpopulated region of the country into a high-tech semi-autonomous state.

This is part of the prince’s plans to draw foreign investment and diversify the country’s economy away from oil sales.

In 2021, the prince had stated The Line, as a car-free linear city that will form the mainstay of NEOM, could cost up to $200bn to construct. However, later the plan has changed to huge horizontal buildings.

Declining to comment on the particulars of the plan, NEOM chief executive officer Nadhmi Al-Nasr said in an interview: “The Line is an out-of-the-box idea. What we will present when we are ready to will be very well received and will be viewed as revolutionary.”

Dubai currently features the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa.
