PrairieCare has broken ground on an extension of its inpatient hospital in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, US.

The 30,000-foot expansion will create extra 30 inpatient beds, enabling the psychiatric health system to provide care to around 3,500 youth every year.

This move represents the largest increase in psychiatric beds for youth in the US state in several decades.

The expansion will enable PrairieCare to offer and deliver specialised mental health services for youth, adults and families.

PrairieCare CEO Todd Archbold said: “Many patients, including children and teens in psychiatric crisis, end up in emergency rooms, and often are stuck there for days at a time waiting for an available psychiatric bed and the critical help they need.

“The lack of beds available for children and adolescents needing immediate mental health care has become a crisis, and this expansion is just one way we’re hoping to address it.”

As per the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in six youth in the age group of 6-17 in the country experiences a mental health disorder annually, and 57,000 youth in the age group of 12-17 in the state suffer from depression.

Currently, there are only 202 psychiatric hospital beds for youth in the state.

As part of the Omnibus Health and Human Services Finance Bill in 2021, the Minnesota Legislature authorised PrairieCare’s extension.

This ground-breaking event comes following the announcement of PrairieCare’s partnership with Children’s Minnesota to offer care in its first inpatient mental health unit this fall.
