PPG, a global supplier of paints, coatings, and speciality materials, has announced an investment of $380m to build a new aerospace coatings and sealants manufacturing facility in Shelby, North Carolina, US.

The 198,000ft² facility, situated on a 62-acre site, will include manufacturing and warehousing units.

Construction of the new building is set to begin in October 2025, with completion expected in the first half of 2027.

PPG global aerospace vice-president Sam Millikin said: “We look forward to expanding our aerospace manufacturing footprint with this new facility.”

“This investment not only underscores our commitment to the aerospace industry and providing high-quality products, but also positions us to respond more effectively to growing market needs.

“The Shelby, N.C. location will play a crucial role in enhancing our operational efficiency and supporting our customers. We appreciate our continued partnership with Governor Stein, local, state and federal representatives and the Shelby community as we increase our production capabilities in this region.”

The new plant will employ over 110 individuals and is designed to produce PPG’s complete line of aerospace products.

This expansion aims to enhance the company’s capacity and improve service levels for customers by leveraging nearby transport links that optimise supply chain and shipping logistics.

The Shelby facility will utilise ‘advanced’ manufacturing technologies and practices to minimise environmental impact while upholding the highest standards of quality and safety, states PPG.

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, PPG serves customers in the construction, consumer products, industrial, and transportation markets.

In October 2024, PPG agreed to divest its $550m architectural coatings business in the US and Canada to American Industrial Partners, a company specialising in industrial investments.
