POWERCHINA, an integrated construction group, has completed the construction of a 100MW solar project in Zambia.
The design to commissioning of the Kabwe solar project was completed in ten months, 40% quicker than similar projects, the group said.
The project is reportedly the single largest photovoltaic (PV) project by installed capacity in the country.
Located in the Chisamba district, this project is Zambia’s state-owned power company ZESCO’s first solar initiative.
Apart from the 100MW solar station, the project also features a 33/132kV step-up station, a 2.7km double-circuit 132kV transmission line, and an expanded substation.
The development is set to deliver 180 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually, serving 150,000 households and resulting in a 30% decrease in the region’s power shortages.

The team tested two main transformers and 20 box transformers in 30 days, achieving zero errors.
This development follows POWERCHINA signing an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica for a transmission project in Honduras.
This project includes the construction of approximately 176km of 230kV transmission lines and the development or expansion of five substations.
The project will enhance Honduras’ national grid’s transmission capacity, providing crucial support for integrating renewable energy sources and optimising the country’s energy structure.
Previously, POWERCHINA executed the Patuca III and Arenal hydroelectric projects in Honduras.
This new contract signifies POWERCHINA’s expansion from the hydropower sector into Honduras’ transmission and transformation domain.
Recently, POWERCHINA also signed an EPC contract with Viroque Energy, an energy resources company, to develop the Arreaz PV Power Station Project in Spain.
